Sikh delegation to meet Punjab, Haryana Governors

In accordance with the resolution adopted by the five Sikh high priests, a 11-member Sikh delegation would meet governors of Punjab and Haryana here on Thursday to present memoranda against the activities of the Dera Sacha Sauda in Punjab.

A spokesman of Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) told reporters here today that its president Avtar Singh Makkar would lead the 11-member delegation, which would include representatives of Sant Samaj, Nihangs and other SGPC members.

The resolution (Gurmata) was passed by the five Sikh high priests yesterday after their meeting at Amritsar. It expressed dissatisfaction with the apology of the Dera chief Sant Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh, accused of blasphemy, saying the gesture was a “shrewd tactic to divert attention.”

The priests called upon the Sikhs to continue their struggle peacefully against the Dera and its activities besides countering the “propaganda of the Dera.”

The planned struggle included handing over memoranda to Governors of the two states, the SGPC setting up a panel of lawyers for pursuing the cases against the Dera and its chief,

Propagation of Sikh religion, continuation of social boycott of Dera followers.

With various Sikh organisations, including SGPC, ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and radical groups, having declared that the Sikhs were bound by the ‘hukamnama’ (religious edict) of the five priests, peace returned to the state today
