Seven women killed in a road crash in northern India

Seven women were killed and 20 others injured when a truck in which they were travelling collided with an oil-tanker in India’s northern Haryana state on Sunday, a news report said.

The women who were in a group of pilgrims were on their way to a religious function when the accident happened near Hissar city, some 220 kilometres south-west of the state capital Chandigarh, the PTI news agency reported.

All victims in the accident were from New Delhi. The injured were rushed to local hospitals.

According to the New Delhi-based Institute of Road Traffic Education, India accounts for 13 per cent of road accident fatalities worldwide.

Nearly 80,000 people are killed in road crashes in the country annually, the highest number in the world. Another 350,000 are seriously injured.

Reckless driving, untrained drivers and poor maintenance of roads and vehicles are among the main reasons behind the number of accidents.
