Safai karamcharis issue warning to govt

Safai karamcharis’ unions from eight states of the country have called for to gherao Parliament in case their demands were not met by the Centre and state governments.

Giving a call for abolition of contract system, the unions warned the Centre of serious consequences if their demands were not met.

Expressing anguish over the callous attitude of the authorities, former Union minister Buta Singh, lending full support to their demand, said, “Contract system in every form should be abolished.”

He also assured that he would take up the matter of non-issuance of SC certificates in Chandigarh with Union ministries concerned.

Union Minister of State for Finance and Chandigarh MP Pawan Kumar Bansal expressed deep angst and shock over non-issuance of SC certificates to the deserving persons in Chandigarh. Bansal promised to take up the matter at the highest level.

The safai karamcharis’ organisations gave a deadline of two months to the government to accede to their demand of ending of contract system. “The dire consequences for non-compliance on part of the government can be unimaginable and we will show it to the government that they cannot take us for granted. We will resort to stoppage of sanitation services throughout our member states,” warned Shyam Lal Ghawri, newly-appointed convener of the Punjab unit of the All India Safai Mazdoor Congress.

Venting their ire against All India Safai Karachari Aayog Chairman Santosh Chaudhary for not being able to take up the cause of sweepers from all across the country, they have demanded her ouster.

Safai karamcharis also demanded that employment be given as per the Government of India notification of 1977-1978, which says that 375 sweepers be employed for one lakh population.

Deliberations on insurance benefits up to an amount of Rs 7 lakh and formation of Safai Karamchari Commissions in all states on Central government pattern were also discussed during the meet. Provision of residential houses at concessional rates of interest was also discussed on the sidelights of the meet.
