SAD to make soldiers slain in ‘84 riots a poll issue

Batting for all those servicemen killed during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in various parts of the country while they were in transit, the ex-servicemen wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal is bent upon making it a poll issue.

National secretary general of the ex-servicemen wing of the SAD, Col P i S Phulka (retd) said that the Congress party had ignored the claims of the families of these 300-odd ex-servicemen who were killed in the riots in the aftermath of indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984.

Phulka said even though he had identified 50 of these Sikh servicemen killed in transit during the riots, the Congress regimes in Punjab and at the Centre had done nothing for their families.

“While these soldiers while travelling in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, besides other places, were killed during the riots, their killings have not been recorded and nor have their families got any compensation after their deaths.”

Phulka said despite sending the names and photographs of these 50 identified Sikh soldiers to the PMO, nothing had been done for their families’ welfare. “The Congress regime is committing a blunder by ignoring the claims of the families of such soldiers slain during the 1984 riots,” he said.

He said the party would make an election issue out of this and hoped the SAD would include the grant of relief for their aggrieved families in its poll manifesto.

He rued that the Congress had not even included the issue in its poll manifesto.
