SAARC countries Home Ministers meet begins in New Delhi

Home Ministers of eight South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries are now discussing the resolution mooted by the secretaries of the grouping to effectively deal with the menace of terrorism.

The deliberations of the SAARC conference will be given a final shape today by the Home Ministers of the eight nations, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and Afghanistan.

The Secretaries of SAARC countries yesterday resolved to move forward in the matter of mutual assistance to check terrorism and Trans-border crimes. They also called for better cooperation among police organizations of member-countries.

In the Secretaries’ meeting chaired by the Home Secretary, Madhukar Gupta, all member-countries felt that terrorism, drug and arms smuggling, human trafficking are challenges to the entire region and have to be fought jointly.

According to a Home Ministry spokesman, the need to strengthen SAARC Terrorism Offense Monitoring Desk and SAARC Drug Offenses Monitoring Desk in Sri Lanka was also discussed in the meeting.

The meeting also reviewed the progress in implementation of the decisions of the first meeting of SAARC Home Ministers held in Dhaka in May last year.

According to All India Radio (AIR) report, the 14th SAARC Summit held in Delhi had emphasized the importance of increased cooperation in security related areas, especially the need to combat terrorism, narcotics and psychotropic substances, trafficking in women and children and other Trans-national crimes.
