Private universities to be set up in Haryana soon

The Haryana cabinet on Monday decided to enact the Private Universities Act to allow self-financed, non-affiliated private universitiesinto the state. A state government official said these private universities would be of international standards and the decision was taken in view of the interest shown by several institutions to set up universities for management, computer science, computer applications, law, environment science, medical education and other emerging areas

The cabinet approved a draft of the Bill with the state government putting some conditions in view of the problems faced by Chhattisgarh which also adopted a similar model. Officials said, in Chhattisgarh, out of 108 applications, 95 were allowed to set up universities. Of these, 35 were in hotel rooms in residential colonies and most were thriving by offering correspondence courses. To check “commercialisation of education� the Haryana cabinet decided to impose stringent conditions that include a minimum area of land to be owned at the time of submission of application fro ensuring “minimum standards of quality and safeguarding the interests of the students, especially those hailing from the state�, an officials said after the cabinet meeting.

At present, there are five universities in Haryana andthree deemed universities. JS Gulati, principal, Guru Harikrishan Institute of Management, Karnal, told FE the decision had been taken without consulting educationalists and “some business houses had been lobbying hard for it�.
