Panel for review of new transit system

The Planning Commission has directed the National Capital Region (NCR) planning board to re-examine the corridors of the regional rapid transit system (RRTS), connecting the Capital with UP and Haryana.

The reason cited by an expert committee on urban transport, headed by Anwarul Hoda, member, Planning Commission, is the untenability of the present proposal of RRTS, which is based on the traffic demand on data pertaining to 1919. A study, therefore, will be conducted to update data.

The panel has also proposed to constitute a task force, headed by the the urban development secretary, Anil Baijal, to look into the matter. “The Plan Panel has asked the board to rework the proposal in the light of extension of the metro rail service to some of the NCR towns like, Gurgaon and Noida,” said a government official.

The RRTS includes an integrated rail bus transit system (IRBT) , which would be a part of the phase 1 of RRTS. The link will connect the border of the neighbouring states with Delhi. Also, a rail-bus link will be created to ease traffic congestion in the bordering areas of all the three states, Delhi, Haryana and UP.

The task force will review the exact extensions of the metro line to the NCR towns- Gurgaon-Manesar Industial Complex and the Faridabad- Ballabhgarh Complex.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has also proposed state governments to cover other regions in Haryana and UP, such as Bahdurgarh and Loni Complex.

The task force will also plan the most suitable special purpose vehicle for implementing the RRTS.

For this, railway ministry will also be asked to cooperate in the SPV, as the it owns the land required for the propsed lines.
