HC stays extortion case proceedings against Huda

The High Court on Monday stayed the proceedings of an extortion case against jailed former communications minister Nazmul Huda and his brother Quamrul Huda.

The High bench of Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Shahidul Islam also asked the government to explain in four weeks why the order of framing charges in the case against Huda and Quamrul would not be declared illegal.

On January 9, a magistrate’s court framed charges against the two brothers and three others in the case. A local Awami League leader of Dohar, Ayub Ali, filed the case with the Dohar police on charge of extorting Tk 1 lakh.

Five people including the home secretary and the Munshiganj deputy commissioner have been made respondents to the writ petition filed by Nazmul Huda.

Mahbubur Rahman, assisted by Ashanur Rahman, defended the accused in court. Deputy attorney general Syeda Afsar Jahan represented the government. A special judge’s court of Dhaka on August 27, 2007 jailed Nazmul Huda for seven years and his wife for three years in a Tk 2.4 crore bribery case.
