Haryana ride Sourabh class act

Sourabh Kapoor led the way as last year’s runners-up Haryana trounced Himachal Pradesh 3-0 in the opening match of the North Zone Inter-State Badminton Championships for the Rahimatoola Cup here today.

In the opening match at the Northern Railway Badminton Hall in Karnail Singh Stadium, Kapoor, brushed aside Datul Chauhan 21-11, 21-6 in just about half an hour. Kapoor’s third court smashes from and drop shots caught Chauhan on the wrong foot and gave the top-ranked Haryana lad an easy win. Chauhan showed good court craft but the net tussle showed Kapoor to be supreme.

In the second singles Yogesh Chauhan of HP took the first set off Summet Dahiya 21-19, but a little pep talk from the Haryana coach Ravinder Kapoor later it was the Haryana lad all the way — 21-5, 21-15 in the next two.

Dahiya started to get his smashes right in the second set, and the drops were better, taking him 8-0 ahead. Even before Chauhan could get his act together, Dahiya was serving for the match, his rival on just five points.
