Haryana bandh gets lukewarm response

The Haryana bandh call given by the Adi Dharam Samaj to protest against the murder of Gohana Dalit youth Rakesh, alias Lara, had a lukewarm response in Ambala district today.

All commercial establishments and shops in the district functioned normally throughout the day. All educational institutions including schools and colleges remained open. The vehicular traffic including buses of Haryana State Roadways also worked unhindered.

However, a handful of youth led by Maya Ram Sahota gathered at Ravi Das Mandir in Ambala and took out a procession march to Nahan House Chowk, where they raised slogans demanding immediate arrest of the murderers.

Sahota stated that atrocities on Dalits would not be tolerated. He said law and order situation in Haryana has detoriated and law-breakers roam about freely in the state.

At Ambala Cantonment, Dalits first gathered at the Balmiki Mandir, BC Bazar, and then took out a demonstration towads Indira Chowk, where they tried to block the Ambala-Saharanpur National Highway but were dissuaded by the DSP Rajesh Kumar to disperse.

Some local BSP leaders also joined the demonstrators and gave an ultimatum to the government to arrest the assailants within 27 hours.

Deputy Commissioner R P Bhardwaj said during the bandh no untoward incident was reported. He confirmed that all commercial establishments and education institutions functioned normally on Wednesday.
