First foot-over bridges with escalators for Delhi

With the press of a remote control button, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday inaugurated six foot-over bridges (FOBs) with escalators and two simple ones across Delhi.

The escalators have been installed on bridges which witness high pedestrian movement and would remain operational between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily

Ms. Dikshit said the new FOBs would provide a safe passage to pedestrians while crossing roads that have heavy traffic movement.

They would also come as a major relief to children, senior citizens and the physically handicapped who would now be able to cross the Capital’s busy roads with much ease.

The FOBs with escalators have been inaugurated at Ring Road Maharani Bagh, Indraprastha Marg, Ring Road Inter-State Bus Terminus, Ring Road Rajouri Garden, Ring Road Satya Niketan and Ring Road Moti Bagh.

The two FOBs without escalators have come up at Ratia Marg Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and Bhopra Border Road No.63.

Barring the FOB at ISBT Kashmere Gate that is made of concrete, all the others that have been commissioned are fabricated with steel.

While the cost of the FOBs with escalators has come to around Rs.3.8 crore each, those without escalators have cost Rs.1.3 crore each. The state-of-the-art escalators are capable of handling thousands of persons per hour.

Stating that the FOBs with escalators would prove to be very convenient for pedestrians and help them in avoiding the danger which lurks round the corner when they cross the roads, the Chief Minister said this is the first time in Delhi that FOBs with heavy duty energy-efficient escalators have been commissioned. The escalators would remain functional during all seasons.

Ms. Dikshit described the event as a realisation of a dream and claimed that with this Delhi has taken another step forward in becoming a world-class city.

Pointing out that the FOBs would help considerably in reducing accidents, Ms. Dikshit said all the MLAs have been requested to identify places where they might like to have new escalators in their constituencies.

The Finance Department has been instructed to issue necessary sanction for use of the MLA Local Area Development Fund for commissioning them.

About plans for the future, Ms. Dikshit said the Public Works Department would also install similar FOBs near major flyovers like Dhaula Kuan and AIIMS. Moreover, she said, while 12 FOBs have been commissioned so far, another 16 are in the pipeline.

Work in respect of the FOBs at Mangal Bazar across M.B. Road, Shaheen Bagh Road No.13A and FOBs with escalators at Station Road near Dhaula Kuan and Ring Road R.K. Puram Sector-12 and 13 is in progress.

Likewise work has been sanctioned for FOBs at Greater Kailash-II Outer Ring Road, near Bhairon Mandir Outer Ring Road (ORR), near NSIC ORR, Ashram Mathura Road, Bhogal Mathura Road, Road No.63 Meet Nagar, Naraina Flyover, Rao Tula Ram Marg ORR, Munirka flyover, JNU flyover, ITO Chungi underpass, Shastri Park underpass, ISBT Anand Vihar, Apsara Border Flyover, Bahera Enclave and near Mangolpuri.
