Delhi to host conference on ‘Look East’ policy

india’s “Look East” policy and how Northeastern india could benefit from it economically would come up for a threadbare discussion at a conference to be held here on January 31.

The participants include Union Ministers Jairam Ramesh and Santosh Mohan Dev, former Union Tourism Secretary M P Bezbaruah, Planning Commission advisor A M Gokhale, Lok Sabha MPs Arun Kumar Sarma and Kirip Chaliha, author-journalist Mamang Dai and former chief spokesperson of ULFA Sunil Nath, the conference organisers said in a statement.

A number of policy makers and media persons will be among the participants at the conference.

The day-long conference on “look east policy: a reality check” vis–vis northeast india will have four sessions - trade and regulatory issues; infrastructure, human resources and tourism; art and culture; and security issues.

The conference has been organised jointly by the North East Media Forum (NEMF), a platform for journalists from northeast working in the national capital, and the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd.

The northeast is seen as an economic bridge to the ASEAN. The North Eastern Council (NEC), an apex body for development programmes in the region, is framing a document to boost economic growth and commerce in the eight states.

The “Vision NER: 2020″ document will provide the basis for boosting efforts in the northeast to make the region a gateway to markets in Southeast Asia in line with india’s “Look East” policy to engage ASEAN countries and East Asia.
