Delhi Police to keep check on cycle sellers

With bicycles emerging as the inconspicuous carriers of the deadly explosives in the serial bombings that rocked Ahmedabad on Saturday and Jaipur in May, the Delhi Police on Saturday decided to keep an eye on cycle sellers in the Capital.

This was among a slew of measures decided during an emergency meeting of the top police brass convened by Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal on Saturday evening in the wake of the serial blasts in Ahmedabad that claimed 15 lives and left over 70 injured.

“There will be increased checks on cycle sellers, of cyber cafes and guest houses,” Joint Commissioner (Special Cell) Karnail Singh told IANS.

The Delhi Police Special Cell conducts anti-terror operations in the capital.

“We will be holding meetings with the market associations and RWAs (Residents Welfare Associations) for better patrolling of busy areas,” Singh said.

Serial blasts rocked Bangalaore and Ahmedabad over two days, sending the security and intelligence agencies into a tizzy.

“We have taken all the anti-terror measures, especially on the routes on which Kawariyas (Shiva devotees) move. Security has been stepped up at railway and metro stations, cinema halls and other busy areas.

“We have asked people not to panic and inform the police if they spot any suspicious vehicle or activity,” Singh added.

Additional police personnel were deployed, along with bomb disposal squads, at Delhi Metro stations, cinema halls, railway stations and inter-state bus terminals.

Patrolling across the city and along its borders has been intensified.

“Extra security cover has been extended to all the religious places, including the Jama Masjid, and the Akshardham and Iskcon temples,” Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.

The police have set up barricades at various traffic intersections and deployed sniffer dogs at railway stations.
