Delhi Archbishop meets PM on anti Christian violence in Orissa

A delegation of Catholic Bishops Conference of India along with Archbishop of Delhi met the Prime Minister today and apprised him of the recent situation in Orissa. Prime Minister mentioned that the Central Government was in touch with the State Government and every effort would be made to restore normalcy in the State.

Prime Minister later spoke to the Chief Minister of Orissa and requested him to take immediate steps in this direction. He also advised the Chief Minister to provide immediate relief to the affected people, particularly children.

The anti-Christian violence that has claimed the lives of more than 20 Christians has devastated the whole community in Orissa.

The community leaders have alleged that the Sangh goons are being given a free hand in attacking and killing the Christians and destroying their churches, schools and other institutions.

In the meantime upset with the Orissa government’s failure to protect Christians against violence by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) (Hindu Fanatic Organization), community leaders has said New Delhi should deploy armed forces to bring normalcy in the state.

“The state government has failed to a great extent to control the violence by the VHP. The police was not taking any steps to control the mob,” said Babu Joseph, spokesperson of Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), a day after a VHP sponsored shutdown against the killing of a VHP leader last week saw churches being attacked and at least two people being burnt to death, IANS reported.
