Security beefed up in Punjab and Haryana

Security in Punjab and Haryana has been beefed up and extra police personnel have been deployed in crowded places following last night’s serial blasts in Jaipur which claimed at least 63 lives.

“A red alert has already been sounded in Haryana in view of the Jaipur blasts. We have deployed additional police forces including home guards at places like bus stands and railway stations throughout the state,” Haryana’s Director General of Police, Ranjiv Dalal told PTI here on wednesday.

He said directions had been issued to all district police chiefs to heighten the vigil in their area and keep a watch on the movement of suspicious elements.

In neighbouring Punjab, an alert had been sounded and a strict vigil was being kept on “criminal elements”.

“Vigil has been stepped up around bus stands, railway stations and other crowded places. Vehicles are being checked throughout the state. We are also keeping an eye on the movement of suspicious people,” Punjab’s Additional Director General of Police, Chandershekhar said.

Checking of vehicles entering and leaving Haryana has also been intensified, he said, adding busy market places were being guarded.

“We are taking every measure possible to avoid further occurrence of Jaipur-like incident in our state,” Chandershekhar said.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh is also on maximum alert in view of the blasts.

“We are on alert and police teams are maintaining an extra vigil around key public places,” Chandigarh’s Senior Superintendent of Police, S S Srivastava said here on wednesday.
