The nomination papers of 27 candidates, including covering nominees of the main parties - Congress, BJP and INLD - were rejected during scrutiny on Tuesday leaving 90 candidates in fray for the May 22 by-election to four assembly constituencies in Haryana and Punjab.
The nomination of 84 candidates for three assembly seats of Adampur, Gohana and Indri in Haryana and of six candidates for the Amritsar (South) assembly seat in neighbouring Punjab were found in order after the scrutiny of nomination papers on Tuesday.
The final picture of contestants would emerge on May 8 - the last date of withdrawals.
The by-poll for the three seats in Haryana arose due to the disqualification of sitting MLAs from Adampur, Gohana and Indri Bhajan Lal, Dharam Pal Malik and Rakesh Kamboj respectively under the anti-defection law after they joined the Haryana Janhit Congress -BL (HJC-BL) formed by Bhajan Lal’s son Kuldeep Bishnoi and the Amritsar South seat fell vacant due the death of sitting Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Raminder Singh Bolaria.
The 41 candidates whose papers were found in order for Adampur seat included former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal’s son and INLD Chief Om Parkash Chautala’s younger brother Ranjit Singh (Congress), former Finance Minister Sampat Singh (INLD) and Parbhat Singh (CPIM).
