GMR to call its IPL team Delhi Daredevils

As Indian Premier League (IPL) franchisee owners gear up to bid for players in an auction on Wednesday, IPL’s Delhi team owners GMR Holdings on Tuesday christened the team Delhi Daredevils. The company, which acquired the Delhi team for $ 4 million, is also awaiting BCCI’s approval for assigning icon status to cricketer Virender Sehwag so that he’s not available for bidding by other city teams.

GMR-IPL CEO Yogesh Shetty said, “We believe this is an excellent opportunity for the company to get associated with the community and T20 format combines cricket with entertainment.” He added that the company is banking on high interest among Delhi fans as well as the entire country to give it adequate returns on investment. It, however, did not disclose the total investment that would be spent on the game. Delhi Daredevils will play its first match against IPL’s Jaipur team on April 19.

GMR Holdings has also initiated talks with various brands to sell apparel, in stadia advertising and merchandise rights. DLF IPL CEO Sunder Raman said that IPL franchisee owners have an excellent branding platform.

“We will see these eight new teams emerging as eight new brands. As far as commercial success is concerned, we have devised a model under which the money invested goes back to the franchisee owners as they get to share the central pool of revenues.
