Barely a week after the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway became fully operational, troubles have been increasing by the day at the toll plaza gate. Not one rush hour passes without there being long lines of commuters waiting to cross the toll gate.
‘’Our travel time has reduced by 20 minutes since the expressway was fully opened but we have to wait in the line here for over 30 minutes so in effect one has to spend 10 more minutes on road,'’ said Lata, a commuter.
While traveling back from Gurgaon to Delhi, one has to wait for 35 minutes to reach the toll booth. The people manning it say they are not the ones delaying the traffic.
‘’Some people give Rs 500 or Rs 1000 for Rs 16 tax. Even then we don’t take more than 3 seconds per car. There are some people who refuse to pay tax, so that creates problems,'’ said Ajay, a toll collector.
The expressway was meant to cut down travel time but seems to have added many minutes to it. What then is the solution?
After opening two and a half years late, the Gurgaon Delhi freeway is raising many questions about traffic management. The project is on a 2-week trial run. One can only hope that as days go by commuters would have reason enough to thank the project and not continue to curse it.
But till then, patience is the virtue for the drivers on the freeway.
