Lack of facilities: Law college students protest in Gurgaon

THE students of National Law College in Gurgaon went on a strike on Friday protesting the lack of basic amenities on campus.

Agitating students claimed the administration was not addressing their concerns on lack of clean drinking water, shortage of teaching staff, no power back up, hostel facilities, canteen and clean surroundings in the college.

The college, which is affiliated to Maharishi Dayanand University, has 450 students, 10 permanent teachers and six guest lecturers.

Following a power cut during around 9 am on Friday, students of the college, which is located in Sector 40, walked out of their classes.

The college has installed a generator, but, college authorities say, “it is uneconomical, loud and thus, rarely used”. The students continued their protest even after the generator was switched on at around 11 am.

Subhash Gupta, director of the college, said the protest “could have been carried out by some irregular senior students who are afraid of not clearing their exams”. Gupta said the college canteen was shut down because of rowdy behavior by students and non-payment of bills.

The students say they had written to Gupta on August 29 highlighting their problems. A fifth year student, on condition of anonymity, said, “the college refused to even accept our memorandum…stating that if we did not like the available facilities, we could leave.”

Regarding hostel facility, Gupta said, “No hostel facility was promised either in the prospectus or at the time of admission. We asked whether there would be any takers if we built one near the college but we got only one response, and so dropped the idea.”
