The newly appointed commissioner of Delhi Police, Yudhbir Singh Dadwal, came down heavily on the wayward Blueline buses on Thursday and said that indisciplined buses would not be tolerated on Delhi roads anymore.
Dadwal, who took over from K K Paul on Thursday morning, said that apart from the traffic police, the PCR and district police have also been roped in to prevent the menace.
“It’s extremely painful to see people dying because of these buses. There has to be a crackdown on such buses. I want to tell people that Delhi Police is gearing up to prevent such accidents.
Rash driving by buses coupled with unmanageable crowds on pavements is leading to this problem. Traffic police will work with the district police and also PCR to rein them in,” said Dadwal.
The commissioner added that the police would start by ensuring that there is proper lane driving in Delhi by Blueline buses and also other vehicles. “There can’t be any overtaking by buses.
We will also install 100 more CCTVs at traffic intersections to ensure better movement of traffic,” said the 1974 batch IPS officer.
He added that traffic was a priority area for him and that traffic personnel would now be present on roads till late in the night.
In a clear warning to some of his officers, Dadwal said that he judges his officers on only three counts — integrity, honesty and merit.
“There is no place in my scheme of things for those who fail on any of these three counts.
The police has to function in a manner which instils cconfidence in the common man and creates fear among the criminals. Those police officers who don’t mend their ways will be left behind,” said the commissioner.
The commissioner also said that quality investigations, crime against women and the upcoming Commonwealth Games were priority areas for him. “We already have a good conviction rate but we want to carry this forward.
As for crime against women, rape is already showing a downward trend and we want to handle it in the most sensitive manner possible,” he said. The officer added, “We look after the big criminals and often neglect the petty ones who later carry out some sensational crime.
To prevent this we will strengthen the beat policing system, but more importantly we will focus on collection of criminal intelligence. It’s important to identify the bad elements in any given locality.
There can’t be just knee-jerk reactions from the police,” said Dadwal, who is credited with solving the Punjab CM Beant Singh assassination case.
“Commonwealth Games are crucial for us. Our proposal for more manpower is at the final stage, but we have already roped in private institutes to train our staff.
Delhi Police has to play an important role in ensuring that not just the participants, but also all visitors to the city during the Games have a pleasant stay here,” said Dadwal, who had supervised the police arrangements for the Asian Games in Delhi in 1982.
Dadwal further said that the police are also devising plans to prevent touts from cheating gullible people at the airport.
“Airport is an important focus area for us and we are working to rid the place of such elements,” said the commissioner, who in the past has served as DCP (airport) and also special commissioner (operations).
