Rains in north bring down temperatures, provide relief

Light to moderate overnight rains across the northern belt brought down temperatures and provided a much-needed relief to the people reeling under the severe heat wave.

The mercury dropped a couple of degrees from the normal range at many places with Chandigarh recording 21 degrees Celsius and Delhi dipping to 23.7 C from yesterday’s 25.2, weather officials said.

Chandigarh was overcast after receiving 3.6 mm of rains during the night.

Ambala was lashed by 2.2 mm of rains and the minimum temperature there touched 22.2 C while Hisar registered 22 C after it received 6.3 mm rain.

Kalka in Haryana was lashed by heavy rains (24 mm) while Panchkula, Kurukshetra and Sonepat were among other places in the state that received rains.

The officials said Palam in Delhi received 2 mm of rain and Safdarjung received a small amount of rain.

The low at Ludhiana dropped to 19.4 C after being lashed by rains (9.2 mm). Amritsar received 5.8 mm rainfall and the low there settled at 18.4 C. Patiala received 1.6 mm of rain and recorded a low of 21.6 C.

Srinagar experienced a cold night as the low there dropped to 13.9 C after being lashed by 11.4 mm of rainfall. Jammu also received rains at 9.2 mm and the low there was recorded 21 C.
