West Bengal, Haryana reach National Youth B’ball quarters

WEST Bengal girls outclassed Karnataka 51-32 to secure a berth in the quarter-final stage of the 24th Youth National Basketball Championship at the RDSO courts, here.

The score at half-time was 27-13 in favour of West Bengal. For the winners A Banerjee (14), Sushila (12) and for the losers Sinholi (11) and Swathi (9) did the bulk of scoring.

In another girls’ section match, Haryana defeated Andhra Pradesh 75-44 to also secure a berth in the last eight stage of the tournament.

Though the score at the breather was 32-34 in favour of the Andhra, however, Haryana girls resorted to a highly attacking game in the second-half of the play and that paid the team rich dividends. On behalf of the winners Alka (30) and Madhu (27) were the main point-getters while on behalf of the losers V Dharan (16) played well.

In the boys’ section matches played on Friday morning, Maharashtra defeated Jharkhand 76-60 while Gujarat defeated Orissa 71-59. With these victory both Maharashtra and Gujarat have qualified to the last four stage of the boys’ section.

In the loser’s knock out matches (girls’ section) played in the evening, Orissa Girls defeated Himanchal Pradesh 24-21 in a thrilling encounter, Chandigarh defeated Pondicherry 61-12 while West Bengal registered a 56-33 victory against Haryana.

In the late night matches played on Thursday, Delhi boys defeated Punjab 92-79 while Uttar Pradesh defeated Andhra Pradesh 98-52. Both the teams have qualified for the quarter-finals.

In the girls section matches played on Friday, Andhra Pradesh defeated Rajasthan 50-49 while Haryana defeated Pondicherry 43-1.
