With India leaving out Munaf Patel due to back injury for the opening Test against Bangladesh, the selectors have decided to replace him with 18-year-old Delhi speedster Ishant Sharma for the remainder of the tour, which concludes with the second Test in Mirpur.
Ishant will leave Delhi for Chittagong on Saturday.
On Friday morning Ravi Shastri, the cricket manager of the Indian team for this tour, spoke to a senior Indian board official to convey the news of Munaf’s unavailability.
Following this Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of the national selection committee, spoke to his colleagues over the telephone and it was decided that Munaf would return to India immediately and be replaced by Ishant.
It is understood that the team management specifically requested the selection committee to send Ishant to Bangladesh.
India decided to play Zaheer Khan, VRV Singh and RP Singh as their three-pronged pace attack.
S Sreesanth who reported injury during the first ODI has already flown back and with Munaf left out, Ishant Sharma is set to be flow in as his replacement.
Ishant is a rarity among India’s fast bowling fraternity as he is among the tall breed.
His is 6′4″ and still growing, touches the 130kph mark consistently and also possesses a sharp and deceptive bouncer delivered from a high-arm action that leaves batsmen on their toes.
He started to play serious cricket at 14, rose quickly through the ranks and played Ranji Trophy one-dayers for Delhi this season, and a Deodhar Trophy game as well.
His relatively frail physique is a worry but if he is looked after, he could well scale the heights.
