Tightest security cover in Kannur for trouble free polling

To ensure free and fair elections in politically sensitive Kannur district of Kerala, as many as 9,000 security personnel will be deployed during the may three assembly polls, district collector K S Srinivas said today.

A total of 9,000 security personnel, including 15 companies of armed forces drawn from Haryana, Rajasthan and Karnataka, would be deployed in ten assembly segments in the district.

Of the available 1000 digital cameras, 600 alone would be installed for the first time in most sensitive polling booths in Kannur district while the rest in neighbouring Kasaragod to monitor poll irregularities during the third and final phase of polls, he said.

All the 1,477 polling booths in the two districts were considered to be ’sensitive’ while 232 booths classified “vulnerable,” he said.

He said the election commission has got the prerogative to decide on holding repolling in selected booths where the polling percentage touched over 80 per cent.

As many as 7,000 officials would man the polling booths with a minimum of four polling staff in each polling station.
