Death sentence for two Haryana gang members
The Ranipet Fast Track Court sentenced to death and to life two members of a Bhawaria gang from Haryana in two murder and dacoity cases and sentenced to life three others of the gang in a dacoity case on Friday.

According to the prosecution, in 1992, two accused, Ashok alias Lakshmanan (31) and Oma alias Om Prakash (50) entered the house of Dr. Mohan Kumar in the Tamil Nadu Housing Board quarters in V.C. Mottur near Walajapet, murdered him and attacked his wife and sons and took away cash and 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery.

In another case, Ashok, Oma, Jagadeesh, Rakesh alias Guttu and Rajendra Singh were accused of having gained entry into the house of Gunasekharan, a chemical factory owner in V.C. Mottur on July 7, 2003, and murdering his mother, attacking Gunasekharan, his wife daughter and son and looting 142 sovereigns of jewels and cash.

Disposing of the two cases on Friday, the FTC judge, G.K. Bharathi, sentenced Ashok and Oma to death by hanging under section 396 I.P.C. and to life imprisonment under section 395 I.P.C. in the Mohan Kumar murder case.

Ashok, Oma, Jagadeesh, Rakesh and Rajendra Singh were sentenced to life imprisonment and directed to pay a fine of Rs.1,000 each under sections 395 and 396 I.P.C. and to seven years rigorous imprisonment under section 397 I.P.C. in the Chennammal murder case.

The judge commended the performance of the police under the leadership of S.R. Jangid, Inspector-General of Police, North Zone. Mr. Jangid told newspersons that the convicted were among the 13 persons of the gang arrested a year ago in connection with 24 cases, including the murder of the then Gummidipoondi MLA, Sudharshanam. There had been no major dacoities or murder-for gain cases on the national highways after the arrest of these persons, he said.
