Thai stalls at Surajkund Mela this year

Longing for an excursion? Plan a visit to Surajkund mela ground near Faridabad any day between February 1-15. The colourful Surajkund Crafts Mela is back with over 320 craftsmen from across the country. An added bonanza this year would be the stalls put up by craftsmen from Thailand, Afghanistan and Bangla-desh. A visitor can not only relish the authentic Thai food at the mela but also take home the famous Thai silk.

“This is the first time that we are inviting craftsmen from SAARC countries and Thailand to the mela and are expecting a great response,” said Haryana Tourism Minister Kiran Choudhary.

The mela organisers are planning a painting and photography competition to commemorate the 2550th Year of Mahaparnirvana of Buddha. Dance performances by Shovana Narayan and Saroj Vaidyanathan are also being planned at the mela this year.

if Thai craft does not excite your desi sensibilities, the theme state of the year is Andhra Pradesh. “We are going to have handwoven cotton sarees from Pochampally, Venkatgiri and Bell metal crafts on display in the mela this time. Besides Thai cuisine, visitors can always visit our stalls for Hyderabadi biryani and kebabs,” said Choudhary.

While the Surajkund Crafts Mela model will be adapted by other states like Orissa and Karnataka in the next few months, Choudhary added that the authority is organising an Exporter-Craftsmen forum to initiate interaction between exporters and craftsmen. This will be coordinated by the Ministry of Textiles.

“We are hoping to replicate this model in Saudi Arabia and delegates from Doha are expected to visit the mela this time,” added Choudhary.
