New Years eve: Delhi police on alert

As Delhiites prepare for the New Year eve bash to welcome 2007, the Delhi police have its hands full.

Late night parties along with drunken revelry and rash driving means that cops need to be on their toes.

“We have all the measures in hand to avert any terrorist activity and any untoward incident. There will be a large police deployment to keep in check the incident of eve-teasing, rash driving, drinking etc,” said Karnal Singh, Joint Commissioner, Delhi Police.

Traffic arrangements

Keeping in mind the busy traffic flow, the traffic police have made elaborate arrangements throughout the city.

No vehicle shall be allowed to proceed towards Cannought Place after 7:30 pm (IST).

No traffic to be allowed beyond Mandi House roundabout, Bengali market, Ranjit Singh flyover, Chelmsford Road, Gole Market, KG Marg, Ashok Road and Windsor Place.

However, motorists coming from Connaught Place area can use the above mentioned roads.

Makeshift parking arrangements will be made near Connaught Place for the party revelers.

Only cars having parking labels will be allowed to visit the hotels located within the restricted areas.

Passengers bound for the New Delhi Railway Station will undergo due verification.

“Fifty teams of police equipped with alcometers have been deployed to make sure that no one indulges in drinking while driving along with keeping in check other deviant elements. Our huge manpower deployment will ensure a smooth evening,” said Qamar Ahmed, Joint Commissioner, Traffic Police.

The police have enough reasons to cobble up the security measures. It would however be interesting to see how effective this new mix of technology and enhanced manpower proves to be.
